General information as of October 2026, not legal advice. Conditions, amounts and procedures change: always check the official sources (the Make it in Germany portal and the German embassy or consulate responsible for you) before you decide anything.
What it is
The Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) is a residence permit that lets qualified people from outside the EU come to Germany to look for a job, without having a job offer first. It exists since June 2024 and is meant for skilled people who would otherwise need a concrete offer before they can come.
Who it is for
In general, you need to be able to show:
- A qualification that is recognised as a vocational or university qualification in the country where you got it, or a recognition process in Germany that is under way.
- Language skills in German or English, at a minimum level.
- Enough money to support yourself while you look for work, shown with documents.
- Points in a points system. Qualification, work experience, language skills, age and links to Germany can all earn points, and a minimum total is needed.
The exact points, levels and amounts are set by the authorities and can change.
What you can do with it
In general, the card allows you to stay in Germany to look for a qualified job, and to do trial work and a limited side job while you search. If you find a job that matches your qualification, you can usually change to a residence permit for skilled workers.
What to prepare before you apply
- Start the recognition of your qualification (see our guide on recognition) and keep every document.
- Get a language certificate: it earns points and is required at a minimum level.
- Collect proof of your work experience and of your finances.
- Read the official requirements for your country and profession: appointments and documents differ between embassies.
Is it the right route for you?
For some people a different route is better: a job offer from a German employer, an apprenticeship (Ausbildung) or studying. Which one fits depends on your qualification, your German and your plans. A conversation about your situation often saves months.
If you would like to talk it through, you can book a call or take the two-minute quiz on this site.
